Ascension Grappling Championships


Requirements

  • 1.1) Gi tops should reach the athlete’s thigh and sleeves should be no more than 2 inches from the athlete’s wrist when both arms are extended straight out. GI pants should be no more than 2 inches above the ankle bone. Gi’s will not be checked or measured before the tournament. However, officials have the right to ask a competitor to change his/her Gi if they deem it an improper fit, see tears in the fabric, or if odors are apparent.

    1.2) Competitors may wear a rash guard under their Gi. Shirts are not permitted under Gi’s.

    1.3) For NoGi Men divisions, athletes have to wear board shorts without pockets or with pockets entirely stitched shut and reaching at least halfway down the thigh and at most to the knee. Attached metal or plastic of any kind that may hurt the opponent is expressly forbidden on the board shorts. Spats can be worn under the shorts if selected. Athletes also have to wear a rashguard or a shirt of elastic fabric (clings to body). This rash guard or shirt does not need to meet any color requirements. Athletes cannot compete shirtless or wear a loose shirt of any kind.

    1.4) For NoGi Women divisions, athletes have to wear board shorts or lycra elastic pants without pockets or with pockets entirely stitched shut and reaching at least halfway down the thigh and at most to the knee. Attached metal or plastic of any kind that may hurt the opponent is expressly forbidden on the board shorts. Athletes also have to wear a rashguard or a shirt of elastic fabric (clings to body). This rash guard or shirt does not need to meet any color requirements. Athletes cannot compete wearing a loose shirt of any kind.

  • 2.1) Athletes’ finger and toe nails should be trimmed and short.

    2.2) Long hair must be tied up or braided.

    2.3) Athletes will be disqualified if they are wearing hair dye or makeup that stains their opponent’s Gi or the competition mats.

    2.4) Athletes presenting skin lesions or any other skin condition will be seen by the tournament medical staff. Under any circumstances, the medical staff will make the final determination if an athlete can compete or not.

  • 3.1) You must check-in and weigh-in least 60 minutes before your scheduled division start time. To facilitate smooth tournaments, in case of early brackets, we request athletes be in the facility, dressed, and ready compete 60 minutes before their match.

    3.2) There will be a 1 pound allowance.

    3.3) If an athlete does not make weight on his first attempt, he/she has until 30 minutes before their division to make weight. During that period, you are allowed 1 weight check before your final weigh in.

    3.4a) Adult athletes who fail to make weight before 30 minutes before the first match in their division will be disqualified. Bumping up due to missed weight is not permitted. Athletes who are disqualified will not be eligible for a refund. It is the athlete’s responsibility to make the weight class they signed up for or have changed to a higher weight class by that event’s “change deadline.”

    3.4b) Kid and Teen athletes who fail to make weight before 30 minutes before the first match in their division will be granted a credit to the next event.

    3.5) All competitors competing in Gi divisions weigh-in WITHOUT their Gi on.

    3.6) An athlete who competes in both their Gi and NoGi divisions only has to weigh-in once.

    3.7) Weigh-Ins Begin at 8:00

    3.8) Athletes must be in weighed in and ready to compete 1 hour before their scheduled time on smoothcomp due to potential early division starts.

    3.9) Any athlete who is not present at the 30 minute bullpen call for their division will be Disqualified (where athletes stay before being called onto their assigned mat).

  • 4.1) Use of any foot gear, head gear, hair pins, jewelry, cups (genital protectors) or any other protector fashioned of hard material that may cause harm to an opponent or the athlete him/herself is forbidden.Also forbidden is the use of head wear – be it bandages, hoods or an elastic cap.

    4.2) The use of joint protectors (knee, elbow braces, etc.) that increase body volume to the point of making it harder for an opponent to grip the Gi are also forbidden.

COmpetition Outline

  • 5.1) Kids (4-7) - 3 Minutes

    5.2) Kids (8-12) - 4 Minutes

    5.3) Teens (13-17) - 4 Minutes

    5.4) Adult (18+) White & Blue Belts/Beginner & Intermediate - 5 min

    5.5) Adult (18+) Purple, Brown, & Black Belts/Expert - 6 min

    5.6) Clock DOES NOT stop due to out of bounds! Clock will only stop for blood time, submission, or time expiration.

    5.7) Blood time 5 minutes total. Ref will assess when clock should be stopped and action should resume. 

  • 6.1) Gi: will follow IBJJF Rules. Please visit IBJJF Rules

    6.2) No-Gi: AGC does follows traditional scoring. Scoring 2 takedown, 2 sweep, 2 knee on belly, 3 guard pass, 4 mount, 4 back mount. All positions must be held and controlled for 3 seconds.

    6.3) Takedown will be awarded when athlete takes opponent to the mat for longer than 3 seconds. 2 Knees and behind the person with double underhooks, Hips, buttocks, back, or stomach must be in contact on the floor for full duration. For example, rolling from hip to back to stomach to a stand in 3 seconds is not a takedown.  Example 2, arm drag is initiated, and opponent pulls guard to avoid back being taken, takedown points will be awarded.

    6.4) Double Guard Pulls: Please visit IBJJF Rules

    6.6) There are no “Advantages” in NoGi.

    6.7) The first penalty will result in warning. A second will result in 2 points for the opponent. The 3rd will result in DQ.

    6.8) Draws will result in a ref decision based dangerous submission attempts from any position, positional control, and match pace.

    6.9) A match is finished when an opponent physically or verbally submits, time expires, or an athlete is DQ’d. Screaming during a submission will also result in a “verbal submission”. 

    Ref Gestures

    Refs will visibly count all positions that require time as a determine factor if points will be awarded. If a count has to reset due to positional change, the ref will indicate a new set of “counts.”

  • 7.1) Ref will do their best to recreate the scenario. Due to the continuously running clock, stalling by either opponent to prevent re-engagement will result in warning.

    7.2) Ref will state, “Stop!”. They will then remind athletes the clock is still running. They will indicate athletes to “recreate the position”, and assist in recreating the position. Finally, the rest will state, “Ready. Go!”.

    7.3) Any blatant stalling to recreate the position can result in a penalty. The Referee will recreate the position the best he can, and say, “Ready. Go!”

  • 8.1) The three top-placed athletes in each division shall receive medals. The champion shall receive a gold medal and their tournament bracket poster with divisions with 8 or more competitors. The runner-up shall receive a silver medal, and third place will receive bronze.

    8.2) Prizes will be awarded according to the results of the match.

    8.3) Grand Prizes will be awarded at specific events throughout the year. However, not all divisions in an event of are eligible to win a grand prize. Atthlete’s should visit the event’s page to know if Grand Prizes will be awarded and for what divisions.

    8.4) When competing in a division where grand prizes are being awarded, the athlete must be 18 years old or more the day of the tournament to be eligible to claim it.

    8.5) There must be at least 4 signed up competitors in a division that is granting a prize, for that prize to be awarded to its division champion.

  • 9.1) All events are pre-registration only. Registration will close 4 days before the event. (Example: An event on a Saturday will close registration the Tuesday prior at 11:59pm.).

    9.2) In order to register, you must fill the form in our Registration section. After submitting your form, you must follow the Paypal link that will be available in order to complete your payment.

    9.3) Completing the form will not get you registered for the event if you do not complete the payment with Paypal. You cannot complete the form and then try to complete payment at the event.

    9.4) We highly encourage you to read the registration dates closely for important pre-reg, reg deadlines, and other information particular to that tournament.

Format

  • 10.1) Double Elimination with consolation brackets for Bronze in divisions of 4 athletes or more up to 32. Divisions bigger than 32 will be single elimination until the round of 32.

    10.2) Round Robin for 3 or less athletes in a division.

  • 11.1) Competitors must pre-register for absolute divisions.

    11.2) Absolute Divisions are single-elimination.

    11.3) NoGi Absolute divisions use respective rules during their matches. Please refer to ruleset chart.
